Panel Discussion: Celestial Bodies

  • Stove Works 1250 East 13th Street Chattanooga, TN, 37408 United States (map)

Join us Saturday, June 7th from 2:00–3:30 pm for panel discussion inspired by Celestial Bodies, our current exhibition curated by Neena Wang.

Panelists: Neena Wang, In Kyoung Chun, coco liao, & Oliver Ito

Exploring their shared connection among the Asian diaspora and their relationship to the American South and Midwest, panelists will engage in an intergenerational conversation considering the shaping and reshaping of personal narrative, familial histories, and how collective imaginations have carried past and place across the world (and sky).

“The term ‘celestial,’ once a racial slur used against Chinese American laborers in the 19th century, is reclaimed and dedicated to a shared cosmic connection among the Asian diaspora. Featuring fourteen AAPI artists with ties to the American South and Midwest, this exhibition reflects on how migration reshapes personal and cultural mythologies, birthing new visual languages and collective imaginations. […] Just as stars chart ancestral pathways across the night sky, [the works in this exhibition] trace the journeys of those who came before us—seeking belonging, forging new homes, and dreaming beyond borders.” –Neena Wang
